With a solid lead going into the final round, the United States needed only three points to capture the Presidents Cup at the Royal Montreal Golf Club on Ile Brizard just west of Montreal.
The International team created a little suspense, including a victory by
Mike Weir over Tiger Woods, but the United States captured the Presidents Cup by a score of 19.5 to 14.5.
Weir pulled out a dramatic, hometown victory with a ten foot putt. Weir had been up 3 after the tenth hole and saw Woods battle back and take a one stroke lead before Weir birdied the par three seventeenth while Tiger’s putt skimmed past.
That left the drama for the final hole, but it was a short lived drama. Tiger pulled his tee shot and that really left him no chance when Weir made no mistake.
But Weir’s victory was Pyrrhic as the International Team went down.
Scott Verplank took on South Aftican Rory Sabbatini and capped it with a 30 foot putt on 16 that put the match on ice.
Ernie Els came through for the International Team with a two up win over Lucas Glover.
Phil Mickelson dominated Vijay Singh who certainly didn’t have his “Eh” game with him. Singh won the first hole and that was all she wrote as he went down 5 and 4.
Angel Cabrera handled Woody Austin without having to see Austin take another dive. It was a close match but Austin was never ahead.
Adam Scott defeated Zach Johnson without letting Johnson get any closer than even. Scott took the match 2 and 1.
David Toms caught up to Trevor Immelman at the turn and held on to win 2 up. Toms earned a total of 4.5 of a possible five points during the event.
When Stewart Cink defeated Nick O'Hern 6 and 4, it locked up the win for the United States.
Once that was over, Geoff Ogilvy defeated Steve Stricker 1 up and K.J. Choi defeated Hunter Mahan 3 and 2 to add to the point total for the Internationals. But it was too late.
After the flood, Charles Howell III defeated Stuart Appleby 2 and 1 and put a nail in the coffin. In the aftermath, Retief Goosen defeated Jim Furyk 2 and 1.
